Periyar National Park, Kerala

We visited Periyar National Park and Tiger Reserve in November 2018, staying in nearby Thekkady.

We were very lucky with our hotel. We had booked one within our backpacking budget but ended up being upgraded to the five-star Elephant Court hotel instead! Sadly, the weather was disappointing, and it rained the entire time we were there.

There were three options for exploring the park: a three-hour hike through the forest, a jeep safari which was pretty expensive, and a boat trip which cost around £7 each, which included admission to the forest. Knowing our chances of seeing the animals was low due to the bad weather, we went for the cheapest option.

There are around 800 elephants in the park and tigers, but sadly we didn’t see them. Instead, we saw a lot of cheeky monkeys around the ticket booth which were trying to snatch our bags and camera!

On the boat ride, we saw cormorants, osprey, a kingfisher, bison, sambar deer and a water monitor lizard.

Although the trip was fun, it was a little disappointing not to see the elephants or tigers.

During our stay in Thekkady we also got the chance to watch a Kalaripayattu martial arts show which I will write about in another post.
