Not far from the train station in Malang, Java, is Kampung Warna Warni Jodipan, a former slum area which has been painted in rainbow colours to become a tourist attraction.

Inspired by a similar project in Brazil, a group of PR students from Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) worked with a paint company to transform the fortunes of the area.
Around 107 homes are painted in a wide range of colours and there are plenty of other murals and 3D effects to enjoy as you walk around.

One alley is dominated by colourful umbrellas. It feels a little like walking around a children’s picture book or a carnival and the whole area felt very friendly and welcoming.
There are plenty of places to buy a drink or an ice cream and there are some public toilets as well.
For a small entrance fee (less than 20p), this is a great place to spend an hour or so while in Malang, Java.
